In my favorite music doc Hype! - all about the 90s Seattle music scene, a talking head explains the genius of Sub Pop's approach (which was that of Motown's and many other's) but seemed novel coming off the rugged individualism of 80s A&R. SubPop didn't hype the band, they hyped the label. It was THE grade A stamp of approval for emerging headz who'd been recently grunge-pilled. I think about that quote often. The same applies for Big Crown, a Brooklyn based independent label. The sound, or vibe, is of the nouvelle soul variety, but there's definite range. Acts like Holy Hive layer in Beach Boys style harmonies over their dreamy doo wop. The curation is damn near perfect. Here's a good intro playlist to the label: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1H3uLfisawmcMsLi2Uq2Ih?si=fb3ea2b7b1544c7f
